Director KJ Patel and RDM EDI Academic Lead Anne Goriely kicked off the day with a Welcome and a talk to highlight the recently established People, Culture and Inclusion Committee and the upcoming initiatives and opportunities to support the WIMM community and promote a positive research environment and culture.
The scientific sessions throughout the day were filled with fantastic talks from researchers across the Institute, highlighting work from our different research areas: haematology; immunology and infection; stem cells and developmental biology; rare diseases; and cancer. For the first time, there were also talks dedicated to showcasing innovation at the MRC WIMM.
In between the talk sessions, researchers from the various groups and facilities at the WIMM presented posters on their work, giving members a chance to learn even more about the different research carried out at the Institute.
WIMM Day attendees were able to find out more about sustainable laboratory practices from the Institute's sustainability working group and members of the central University's sustainability team at the Sustainability Stand. This stand also featured a plastic speed sorting game for researchers to test their recycling knowledge!
The 10th Weatherall Lecture was delivered by Professor Jason Chin from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. Professor Chin gave an excellent keynote talk on "Reprogramming the Genetic Code".
To close the day, the various prizes and awards were presented by Director KJ Patel.
The Ita Askonas Medal for best student presentation was awarded to Lizzie Horton (Rehwinkel Group).
The Andrew McMichael Medal for DPhil mentorship was jointly awarded to Professors Jan Rehwinkel and Andi Roy.
The WIMM Day Poster Prizes were awarded to:
1st Place - Naeema Mehmood (de Bruijn Group)
2nd Place - Shamsideen Yusuf (Drakesmith Group)
