Details

Virtual one-day MS Teams short course, covering  the basics of optics, microscopy, experimental design, sample preparation and image analysis. This free course brings together imaging experts and facility managers from all across Oxford and replaces previously held in person courses at the various sites across town.

Program

  • 10:00 - 10:30 Introduction to basic light microscopy 
  • 10:30 - 11:10 Understanding the microscope body and objectives
  • 11:10 - 12:10 Sample preparation
  • 12:10 - 12:55 LUNCH BREAK
  • 12:55 - 13:15 Experimental design and choosing a microscope
  • 13:15 - 14:00 Widefield fluorescence microscopy
  • 14:00 - 14:45 Confocal laser scanning microscopy
  • 14:45 - 15:15 TEA BREAK
  • 15:15 - 16:00 Introduction to image analysis, segmentation and co-localization
  • 16:00 - 16:15 Your data and you; using, storing and publishing
  • 16:15 - 16:30 Question and answers session

The short course is meant to provide a basic theoretical background for the everyday microscopy demands in Oxford's biomedical research institutes.  

Course attendants will receive a registration certificate after the course.

We strongly recommend all students and postdocs who require microscopy as part of their project to attend the course as we cover the basics of microscopy and most common types of microscopes and imaging modalities, experiment design, sample preparation and image analysis.
