The MRC WIMM is a diverse community of scientists, clinicians and support staff from over 20 countries. We have a vibrant academic and social atmosphere, providing many opportunities for interaction and collaboration.

The Institute runs several academic seminar series, from weekly lectures on topics of special interest to our MRC Units, to more general science seminars and annual lectures that attract the leaders in the field. We have very active student and postdoc associations who organise a variety of academic and social events. Highlights include one of Oxford's first career seminar series and the student-run Write Club, where scientific topics are discussed using only pen and paper. In 2023, a community for parents and carers was established, which aims to support staff and students of all career stages/paths in their lives as working parents and carers. Our large coffee area acts as a hub for the Institute, where discussions are fuelled by our excellent catering facilities. Our annual away day is the highlight of the events calendar, and an excellent opportunity to hear and discuss the research done at the Institute.

Talking about our research© PeterCanningWe are active members of the local community. We encourage our researchers to engage with the public in a variety of small and large events and reward the best activities and participation with an annual prize. We also nominate annually a charity of choice and fundraising activities happen throughout the year, from bake and craft sales to the famous annual MRC WIMM quiz. There are also a number of clubs open to all staff.

Our staff and students enjoy all the benefits of being members of the University of Oxford, from access to excellent academic training, sports facilities, family-friendly benefits and free access to the University gardens, libraries and museums. Our location at the John Radcliffe site, close to the Headington area, provides easy access to various pubs, cafes and restaurants.
