The Janet Rowley Award was established by the International Society for Experimental Haematology (ISEH) in 2020 in honour of Professor Janet Rowley, a human geneticist and the first scientist to identify a chromosomal translocation as the cause of leukaemia and other cancers. The award recognises early career scientists who have made outstanding scientific contributions to the field.

Adam Wilkinson is an Associate Professor of Stem Cell Biology in the MRC Molecular Haematology Unit, whose Research Group studies haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). HSCs support blood cell production throughout life and are also used clinically in cell and gene therapies. The Wilkinson Group study the biology of this important stem cell population with the aim of developing new HSC-based therapies. The 2025 Janet Rowley Award particularly recognises their ground-breaking work on expanding HSCs ex vivo.

Professor Wilkinson said:

It’s an honour to receive this award from the International Society for Experimental Haematology. But I really need to credit the great team that I’ve been lucky to work with, and my wonderful collaborators and mentors here in Oxford and around the world.
