We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our former colleague Valentine (Val) Macaulay from cancer on Tuesday 2nd July.

Val was a Group Leader at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine for over 15 years, before moving to the Old Road Campus. Since 2021, Val was Emeritus Associate Professor of Medical Oncology for the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Her research focused on the role of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) in prostate cancer, and she remained actively involved in this work during her own illness. As a group leader, Val was hands-on and developed the careers of countless students to independence. She was also a strong advocate for women in academia, encouraging them to find their voice, be assertive and ready to delegate.

Our thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends.

Professor Sarah Blagden has published a tribute to Val on the Department of Oncology’s blog: Celebrating the life of Professor Valentine (Val) Macaulay- Emeritus Associate Professor of Medical Oncology

Val was also interviewed in 2022 for an Athena Swan – Women in Focus Article, which can be found here: Athena Swan - Women in Focus Article: Emeritus Professor Valentine Macaulay
