Professor Douglas Higgs FRS has been awarded the 2013 Buchanan Medal by The Royal Society for his seminal work on the regulation of the human alpha-globin gene cluster and the role of the ATRX protein in genetic disease.
The Buchanan Medal is awarded biennially (in odd years) “in recognition of distinguished contribution to the medical sciences generally”.
Professor Higgs said: 'I am delighted to receive this award, which honours the work of the many young basic and clinical researchers who have contributed to my group over many years'.
