I graduated from the University of Wales College Swansea in 1993 with a BSC in Genetics, and started work in the Diabetes Research Laboratories (DRL) at the Radcliffe Infirmary in March 1994 where I performed immunoassays in support of the many clinical trials being run in the department at that time. I moved to the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics (WTCHG) in 1996, which at the time was based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) campus. I spent 2 years working on a type I diabetes microsatellite genome scan led by Professor Mark Lathrop.
In 1998 I returned to the DRL to work in the genetics lab on a complications of type 2 diabetes project led by Professor Robert Turner and introduced techniques for both microsatellite and SNP genotyping. In early 2000 I joined Professor Mark McCarthy’s type 2 diabetes genetics group, then based at the WTCHG (re-located to Old Road Campus), as a research assistant.
I went on to perform the role of Laboratory Manager at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM), administering the laboratory space occupied by Professors McCarthy and Gloyn’s groups. I facilitated the research performed by the group members, whilst contributing to the groups’ research interests in several national and international consortia (CHARGE, DIAGRAM, EGG, GIANT, GoT2D, MAGIC, WTCCC). I also project managed aspects of an EU funded project (DIRECT) for which Prof McCarthy was work package lead.
In 2017 I became Laboratory Manager for the Departments of Experimental Medicine and Investigative Medicine based at the John Radcliffe Hospital where I oversee the day to day operations of our core laboratory which provides support to the departments’ research community.
