Following the visit, Mr Smith said: "It was great to meet researchers and see the fantastic work they are doing. It is wonderful that in Oxford we have the MRC WIMM as a world-leading biomedical institute. I was really impressed to see how clinicians and scientists work closely together to improve the diagnosis and treatment of many important human diseases."
Director of the WIMM Professor Douglas Higgs added: "It is very important that our local Oxford MP took the time to see for himself how our work supported by the UK Medical Research Council and UK Charities is leading to improved human health. It is important that the government and the public remain fully informed, proud and supportive of the outstanding medical research that is being carried out in this country."
