Prof Christian Eggeling with Prof Simon Davies and Dr Jan Rehwinkel, MRC Human Immunology Unit (HIU), have just been awarded a Multi-user Equipment Grant from the Wellcome Trust. This is for upgrades to two existing super-resolution STED microscopes that form part of the Wolfson Imaging Centre Oxford, under supervision of Prof Christian Eggeling and Dr Christoffer Lagerholm. The upgrades will enable users to take super-resolved images in three dimensions rather than two and will enable multi-colour detection. This represents a superb advance for researchers, in the questions that can now be addressed by STED microscopy. The two microscopes to be upgraded are the Leica SP8 STED system situated in the Imaging Centre Room 1 and the RESOLFT/STED system sited in a dedicated Containment Level 3 room in HIU. This latter upgrade will allow the study of highly infectious pathogens such as HIV in living cells. The value of the award is £281K with an additional 10% being supported by the Director’s Fund and Christian Eggeling’s own research funds. The unique upgraded systems will benefit from collaborations and development agreements with companies helping to implement these cutting-edge developments, and will ensure that Oxford and UK researchers have access to the latest super-resolution imaging technology.

Please contact Christian Eggeling or Christoffer Lagerholm if interested in using these new technologies.
