In October 2011 Prof. Sir David Weatherall, Regius Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the WIMM was presented with the Karl Landsteiner Memorial Award and Lectureship by the AABB. The award recognizes a scientist whose original research resulted in an important contribution to the body of scientific knowledge.

Citation: For their independent and collaborative study of the molecular genetics of hemoglobinopathies such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Their efforts have facilitated prenatal diagnosis for at-risk pregnancies, accurate diagnosis of patients with suspected hemolytic anemia, and improved clinical management of patients around the world affected by these serious hemolytic anemias that often require intensive transfusion support.
