The Iron Metabolism Group, led by Hal Drakesmith, will be joining the HIU in April 2013. Already located within the WIMM, the group researches the interaction of iron metabolism and immunity, focussing on the role of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin during malaria, tuberculosis, Candida, HIV-1, and Hepatitis C virus infections. The group is also studying how the molecular pathways that control hepcidin interact with other innate immune signalling mechanisms, especially interferon function. Following Hal's appointment as Group Leader within the HIU, the group will officially become part of the HIU next April. The lab currently has seven members, all of whom are excited to join the HIU.
