The Institute and Industry
The applications of molecular and cell biology to medical practice are of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry and the Institute plays its part in forging links between the University and Industry. Several patents are held and a number of start-up Biotechnology companies have been started by Institute scientists, including Avidex, Oxagen and Oxxon Pharmaccines. The Institute is jealous of its independence however and has been careful to avoid links that could limit academic freedom. Many of the younger research scientists in the Institute go on to successful research careers in biotechnology.
